Feathers
His white wings stretched towards the sky, glimmering in the rays of the sun. He opened his bright blue eyes to the sight of a girl, lying against a tree, looking up at the horizon and staring at the white cotton of clouds that swam in the huge screen of blue that stretched widely at the top of her head. Her hand lay flat on the fresh grass, feeling the coolness brought by the rain of the previous night. He wanted so much to touch her hand although he knew that he couldn't. He imagined how it would have felt to kiss those palms and press it against his face, smelling her sweet scent embracing him. He thought that he'd give up everything for her, to stay by her side forever but not like this. He wanted her to know that he was there, that he's protecting her and that he aches not being able to do so much for her but just watch. if only his wings were capable of embracing her, he'd sweep her away and take her high above the clouds which she admired so much.
He'll give it all up just for her.
He approached the huge doors that separated him from his Father. Inside, the room was a world of snow. White nothingness enveloped everything and He stood in the middle of the room, building himself a new guardian angel.
"Son, what is it that I can do for you?"
"Father, is that how you created me?
"Yes unlike humans, I made you out of snow but that’s not what you really wanted to ask me, isn't it?"
"God, I want to die." He let go of the snow in his hands and sat down on the cold ground, pondering at his angel's last statement.
"I know, but can you last living and giving all of these up?"
"I don't know." he looks around admiring this side of paradise which he has been accustomed to.
"Isn't what I have given you enough that now you are desire something more?" his Father asked him "Isn't your wings enough for you to get by, isn't this paradise a fitting place for you to live? Tell me, what it is that you desire more than this?"
"God, I can spend my whole day with her but she cannot know that I'm there. I can take her away from danger when I see it coming her way but I can never let her know that I am protecting her neither can I hear her say the simple words like "thank you”. I can watch her sleep and stare at her sweet face all night but I can never lay by her side and embrace her. I can always hear her voice whenever she speaks with her friends or her family but it hurts to think that it will never be me whom she'll be talking to. And what's more, I know I have all the time I want and stay with her but she can't. Someday, she'll leave that world and I can no longer be with her."
"Are you willing to die?" his Father asked him. "Are you willing to suffer?"
"I am. You know I do, Father."
"I must give you a trial first. I am giving you a day to live in her world, as the poorest man. You'll have nothing and no one. You're just going to live there and see how things out there are. Then, after that, tell me if you still want to give your wings up."
"I will then. And when I come back, I'll be ready to shed my wings." His father took a handful of snow from the ground, covering his wings until they were no longer visible. And he sends him down to the world.
He woke up to the grumbling of his stomach, his head was completely heavy and he smelled the stench of his own body filling the air. He felt the coldness of the water that's been dripping from the hole of his carton roof. He went out and saw a whole world of trash surrounding him and the drops of rain made the place seem like an even greater mess than it already is. He walked around, looking among the other people dressed like him. They were digging among the trash, poking holes on the mountain of garbage hoping to find dinner. Rats and mosquitoes lived among them, carton houses just like his stood from many corners of his surrounding. He still can't bring himself to believe that he was there. His hunger no longer seemed to consume most of his thoughts; he walked faster and faster, running outside the dumpsite, looking from right to left looking for the way to her house. He seemed to be far from her. He seemed lost, turning from one corner to the other made him feel even farther from her than he already is. Once again, the grumbling of his stomach weakened his knees. He continued to walk but much slower than before, looking around and seeing the uncomfortable stares of the people around him.
He felt like he didn't belong there, he turned left to a dark alley to hide from all the others, he felt his body became lifeless as it leaned against the solid wall. Each hand faintly dropped from both sides, his breath becoming heavier, his heart beating weaker and weaker by every second. He felt pain from his right foot and saw blood gushing out from an open wound. He must have gotten it when he unknowingly stepped on a broken bottle of beer in the dumpsite. Not having any shoes made it even harder to walk on the cold floor. Across him, two silver containers stood. He felt tempted to search for his dinner like everyone else he saw were doing.
A moldy sandwich and some sour milk. That was the first meal of his entire existence and perhaps the worst he'll ever have. He finally had some energy in him to continue. He decided to go to her favorite park, he thought that he'll look for her under the tree they'd spend their Saturday afternoons; where she'll stare at the sky and he'll stare at her sweet face.
Hours later, after losing his way over and over again, he finally stood in front of the tree. The branches stretched over his head and shaded him from the blinding rays of the sun. But she wasn't there, he laid down on the soft grass, looking at the horizon she so admired the most and closed his eyes. He drifted away and his first day was over.
He opened his eyes once more, finding himself inside paradise.
"Now, tell me what is your decision?" his Father's voice echoed from one corner of the room. "How was your first day?"
"I felt very lonely, Father. I thought I was going to die from hunger and I can't believe humans down there enjoyed that foul tasting food they have stored inside those containers. I felt pain when I saw the wound I got, and felt very insecure when the others stared at me feeling disgust at how I looked. Oh, Father! How much I have suffered!"
"As I have told you, life down there isn't as great as what we have up here." He explained. "SO you are staying here?"
"NO!" he answered back like an eager child telling his father about his first school trip to the zoo "I wasn't finished yet. Father, the rain felt very nice, It was the first time I felt it touch my skin, and the ground felt very rough, unlike up here where we would always walk on clouds or fly with our wings. And the sun! It was so warm. The grass! How soft it was and how nice it was to smell it after the rain shower. After that, when I felt like I can no longer continue, I closed my eyes and went to a different world. I think it was what humans call dreams. How nice it was to go to my own world. And when I was about to come back here, I flew by her place and I saw her lying on her bed. Her face was so calm as she drifted away into her own dreams, I wondered if I ever was a part of it. I knew, I'd give up everything just to see her like that at the end of the day for the rest of my life."
"My child, I must take your wings away from you. You are no longer a guardian angel. I will give you what you desire. I will watch over you every single day. Stay with her forever."
His feathers took several days to shed one by one. He waited patiently until all has completely disappeared. And when he finally stepped into the world of humans, the first place he went to was under the tree. He had hoped that she'd be there. The first day, there was no her and the next day was the same, so was the day after that. Every single day, he'd go there and wait until she comes but she never did. He had thought of coming to her house but he knew that it would be unusual in that new world for him to do such a thing. Though he longed for her so much, he didn't feel entirely lonely with his life and he continued to wait every single day until weeks passed, months passed and even years. He lived among the other people but never with the one had he wanted to. He waited and waited until his whole life has passed but she never came.
He died, feeling incomplete. When he faced God at the gates of heaven he couldn't help but cry in His arms.
"God, I never saw her again. Where did she go?"
"She's right here." From the light came this girl, her wings shown brightly glimmering in the sun like his wings used to. And he saw her face, the face she longed so much to see. He embraced her and kissed her hand pressing it against her face. The snow poured form the sky, gave him back the wings that he had given up before.

I never felt lonely in my life, whether I was sitting alone under the shadows of my tree, I felt like someone was always by my side. I was always at peace. Someone was always protecting me. I believe that guardian angels really do exist, that mine is always by my side. I wanted so much to meet him and thank him for staying with me and for keeping me company.
One night, i woke up in the coldness of the air, I felt my body weak and heart beats were as faint as ever. Days passed that way, the doctor could no longer do anything for me. Was I about to die? It was that I felt I was alone. Where was my angel now? Has he abandoned me? I feel so lonely.
I opened my eyes at the sight of heaven and God stood at the other side of the gate, stretching his arms to embrace me.
"God, where is he?" I asked him with so much eagerness.
"I'm sorry my child, he's no longer here. He just left heaven to go down there and be with you." I felt so sad not being able to see my angel and tell him how much I wanted to thank him.
"God, can I be with him, can you make me his angel? I want to repay him for what he has done. I know I can no longer go back down there but I'm willing to wait for him up here. Let me protect him. Please."
"You no longer have to beg me. I've already made your wings. In fact I made it when he was still here, he saw it but he never knew it was you I was creating. Come my child; let me welcome you to your paradise."
Snow fell on her and formed her wings.
Flying down to be by his side, she stared at his face everyday as he sat under the huge tree waiting for her.
She pressed her face against his hands. Feeling him and remembering his warmth.
Finally.
Paradise.
