They say that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Many guys love hose meek girls, but in this story, a guy fell for a girl who stands up for what she truly feels.

Since 1st Grade, they were classmates. And now that they are on their junior year, still they are.

Back when they were still young, Patrick would add fuel to the fire whenever Alina cries.

“Oh common! Cry some more! Luis said that you’re sooooo ugly!” the sharp tongue boy said, hammer and tongs.

“Keep your nose out of my business!” Alina shouted.

“Oh common Alina, don’t cry for the moon.”

“What? It’s greek to me,” young Alina, was confused, trying to figure out what it means.

“Um, I was just trying to comfort you my friend,” said Patrick.

“As if you really do!”

What they were doing wasn’t behind the scenes. They were just in the corridor when their adviser passed by.

“Patrick? You made Alina cry again? Make a clean breast,” said the teacher from hand.
In this case Patrick would pass the back.

“I know what happened. Don’t blame someone else Patrick. You shall act your age for you are now a grade four student. Take your own medicine.”

Things changed when Patrick’s mother got hitched with other man. He just focused on his studies and ignored those loose talks that circulated on their neighborhood.

“Come down to earth Patrick. Your mother loves someone else! Someone who can feather your nest more that your real father can,” he told himself.

Little by little he learned to accept the reality. Patrick gave his level best on his studies. Things have change-even his relationship with Alina. He quits teasing her. She feels unusual for the new Patrick.

They didn’t talk for days, weeks, months, even years, until their high school years. All of their classmates were friendly to Alina (even boys!) except for Patrick. That’s why she’s annoyed with him.

One day, it rained cats and dogs. Alina saw Patrick at the waiting shed.

“Hmmm seems like he’s waiting for someone to fetch him. Good thing I have an umbrella, poor guy,” Alina told herself.

“Alina, wait! Could you please accompany me to the nearest restaurant there? Just a few steps ahead.”

After all those years, it was the first time that he talked to her.

“Who are you to command me?”

“My father was stranded by a heavy traffic so he can’t fetch me,” Patrick said in a warm voice.

“Why don’t you ride a taxi?”

“Can’t you see? The traffic is heavy.”

“Well, if you have a problem, you should paddle your own canoe. It’s your fault. You didn’t bring umbrella.”

“But,” he wasn’t able to continue.

“No way!” Alina shouted.

Alina stick to her colors that she won’t let him to share umbrella with her.

“Please Alina?” pleaded Patrick, in a humble manner.

Patrick held her arms. Their eyes met. She can feel a great attraction between their eyes. She can feel a force from their eyes down to her fingertips. It makes her weak. She can no longer hold his gaze. She went back to reality.

“Stop holding me! Okay, I’ll accompany you,” she said.

His face lit up he heard her say that.

While walking, their bodies bump and she would keep their distance.

“Please stay in place. You’ll get wet,” Patrick says softly, staring straight on her eyes.

It seems like Patrick’s concerned on her. She’s at sea, wondering why she was happy as if she’s living in bed of roses when at the first place, she’s really annoyed with him.

“Goodbye Alina, keep safe,” he said.

“That was it? He didn’t even give you something to eat? Or took you to the restaurant even for dutch treat? And what’s the reason why he went there? Asked Nica, her bestfriend.

“I don’t know. And I don’t want to know the reason why. Let’s just talk about other stuffs,” Alina said.

“Don’t beat around the bush. Maybe, he had a date with other girl.”

Nica saw Alina’s reaction.

“Oh my God, don’t tell me-’’ Nica wasn’t able to continue.

“Shhh, hold your tongue. Since you are my bestfriend, I shall bare my soul to you. But promise me, it’s between you, me and the bedpost,” she said.

“Promise.”

“I think I fell head over heals on Patrick,” Alina said, blushing.

“Whatever your decision is, I’m hear to bare you out,” Nica said, feeling giddy for her friend.

“Alina, please accept this as a sign of my apology and thanks giving,” said Patrick who came out of nowhere.

“Look Alina, your favorite!” says Nica.

“No thanks, I’ve eaten my lunch.”

“Okay, I’ll just leave it on your desk. It’s up to you if you’ll eat it or not.”

Days went and still, Alina can’t sleep remembering how they bodies would bump, his stare at him, and the unexplainable happiness she felt that day. But that was a week ago. She would jot his whole name at the back of her notebooks, with falling hearts in it.

“Bestfriend, please don’t write his name there. Our teachers might see it and you’ll get caught.” Nica said.

“Here, I’m giving you this notebook. And you can write everything there, including your plans for your wedding,” Nica laughed.

“Thank you bestfriend.”

One morning, she saw a bouquet of roses on her desk.

“Maybe, it came from Patrick,” teases Nica.

“Of course not.”

“Then who?”

“I don’t know. If that’s the case, then I was really born under the lucky star!” Alina jokes.

Days went by and her desk was always full with bouquet of white roses every morning.

“That means purity!” Nica said.

“Whatever.”

“Lay your card on the table. Are you gonna answer him?”

“We aren’t sure his one who’s giving me flowers for a month. I haven’t decide yet.”

The notebook was almost full when she realized she lost it.

“Oh my God where is my notebook? My things are in apple pie order so it’s very impossible that it’s just here.” confused, Alina said.

“Maybe you left it somewhere? Oh, it must be in the library! It was the last place we went through since we were brushing up on. Come on, let’s go,” said Nica.

When they reached the library, they saw Patrick holding the notebook.

“No, it can’t be,” said Nica.

Alina started trembling with what they saw. Before she could utter a word, Patrick spoke.

“Is this yours Alina? I saw it on the table. Pardon me if read the writings on it. I was just trying to know who the owner is.”

He gave the notebook but since Alina can’t get it, Nica was the one who grabbed it.

“I didn’t know. You are in love with me,” Patrick says in a humble manner. But he can’t hide his real feeling. He too was blushing. He can’t hide his happiness.

“Yes, I am in love with you. So what?!”

After saying that, she immediately left. No, that wasn’t a slip of the tongue. She mean it.

After the dismissal, Patrick assures that there will be no more students in the room except him and Alina.

When Alina was about to leave, Patrick immediately held her hands.

“Alina, I want to talk to you. Yes I was the one gives you flowers. I know you still keep track of our childhood days but please burn your bridges behind you. You know, I love you. I’m really inlove with you, since our elementary days. I don’t know how to become close to you that’s why I always teased you. When my mother married someone else, I began to think that what I am doing was wrong. I’ll have no dice if I’ll keep doing the same way. I love you Alina, I love you so much.”

There was a moment of silence. Alina got the courage to say, ”I love you too!”

“Since the feeling is mutual, is it okay for you to be my girlfriend? I know we are still young, but I’ll take care and respect you,” said Patrick, still, holding her hands gently.

“Yes!” teary-eyed, Alina said.

They hugged, and that was the start of their wonderful affair of the heart.
