THIRD WHEEL

"In the greatest love affair, there's always a Man... A woman.... and a "Girlfriend" who comes between them..."

A typical oh-so-boring night for Caloy became a very memorable one because of an extraordinary encounter he had with a stranger via his mobile phone. He never intended to reply with those messages but he just found himself stroking the keys of his gadget and responding to that unknown texter. Since then, he can't resist to converse with that stranger even if it's just through mobile.

He's a Mass Communication Student from one of the known school in Manila, now a Senior but the Let's-be-friends-through-texting incident happened when he was still a Junior. It was late in September and he's busy with an upcoming big event for school that time. Nevertheless, he still had time texting this so-called-stranger as days passed by on which I think was very weird since he's really not that type of guy. being a textmate with somebody he barely knows? C'mon, so not him!

Few days after they've known each other, i mean not in person, Caloy brought up the topic about the stranger's current status. "How's ur bf?" He asked, the stranger answered, "I've never had a boyfriend."
I have no idea what came through his mind that he responded, "Why is that you never had a boyfriend? you seem very nice. sige ako na lang first boyfriend mo.. hehehe." That particular night, they became a couple with their cellphones as the medium.

Caloy, never knew how that statement had a very hard impact on that stranger's life. It never seemed that he's serious about it but she chose to believe it's true. Besides, she always dreamt about being with him, and now is the chance for making it happen. Yes, the stranger wasn't a stranger at all. She knew Caloy in person, she has invested a lot of informations about him and let's just say, she's infatuated with him but never wants to admit it. She always insisted that she has feelings for this guy and that she actually loves him.

Caloy, seems to be the reason for Anne--the stranger to go to school everyday, every breathing second of her life, she thinks about him.Their worlds were never too far, they're in the same school and same course too. They've been acquainted thrice by random friends but they didn't became friends, they don't talk either, just occasional nods and half-smiles everytime they pass by each other in the hallway or in the bridge. They exchanged number once and practically texted for a week but Caloy suddenly stopped texting her, not knowing why. That weirded her out.

Anne admits that she found Caloy very interesting. In fact, she never really admired a guy like the way she admired Caloy, so she never stopped thinking of a way to be closer to him. That results of having a text-relationship. Days and nights passed by and everything went well. It felt so right for Anne but she knew it was wrong. Pretending to be someone just to be closer to the guy you are interested with? Definitely not good! She pretended to be someone she's really not. Anne has sent him a different picture, not that she's not pretty--actually she's very pretty, it's just that, she wants to be anonymous.

On the fourth day of having that affair, Anne was hardly hitted by guilt, to the point that she didn't make it to school that day. That's why she planned to tell him the truth when the night comes. So that day, they just texted and texted and texted. She made every single moment left wonderful because she knew that hours later, all of it will be gone. She has no plans of communicating again with him after this. Everything would and should be back into normal.

The moment of truth came and Anne told Caloy everything. As expected, he was so shocked and never wanted to talk to her. But after a few days they talked about it over the phone, her plans failed because he told him everything, including the reason why he did it and her said feelings for him. He's actually very nice when he said he understands, he knows the fact that he can't do anything about it---it's feelings, it's hard to hide. Later to find out that he's a smart-ass-conversationalist-jerk because he's the one with a greater crime!

That same moment, after Anne's confession, Caloy opened up something about his emotions--he's heartbroken. He said he has a "real" girlfriend but few hours earlier, they broke up. Anne asked him why they broke up because he didn't know what to answer because May--her "real" (ex) girlfriend has given him vague reasons. Anne then knew he was deeply hurt, based on his voice and statements. She intently forget about her own feelings that moment because she knew he needs to be consoled. Anne did encouraged Caloy to clear out everything about Him and May, that maybe May was just confused, but caloy was very hesitant and should i mention bitter?

So the big event of the school came, Anne went there to support Caloy but unfortunately, their team was disqualified but they are allowed to have a presentation so she watched and noticed that he's the model of their team's TV ad. Maybe it's the reason why he badly wanted May to watch it. May is the one who should be there not Anne, besides he didn't invite Anne to watch, she just came there because she wanted to support him. Caloy noticed Anne from afar and he looked at her but Caloy's discouraged to talk to Anne because she's with her friends but he doesn't knew that deep inside of her, she just wanted to be with him.

After the event, days have passed again and it also went well, they're having conversations again with no pretentions anymore. It is more blissful for Anne because she's able to talk to him without trying to be she's not, she knew from the start that it was wrong. They definitely had something, not a relationship but really something--an unnamed affair! She had high hopes that maybe the two of them have a chance already since they talk often and Caloy was very devastated about May, but then she became disappointed.

She was black-listed again in his life, they've lost communication and hardly greet each other at school. Anne doesn't know what did happen, all she knew was just he changed his number and he didn't bother to inform her. It's as if there's already a wall between them and it hurts for her because she doesn't know what has been happening. She's asked herself if she did something wrong but their last conversation was fun and She don't think she has said something to drive him away. She has spent a couple of months thinking what really did happen, until she finally knew.

After christmas vacation, Anne's very excited to see Caloy because it's his birthday, she said to herself that no matter what happen, "I will greet him." seems like she doesn't care what he would think about her and she's willing to break down the wall between them. but then, she didn't see him. Well, It's not her day, it's really his.

January 04, 2007, became one of the most memorable heart-breaking experience Anne had. She saw Caloy standing next to May and he walked her to their classroom and gave each other a parting kiss, while Anne was left standing there as her heart was torned into pieces and was left nothing to do but cry. Good thing he didn't see it, because he didn't even look at her!

Anne was very wrecked emotionally because all this time she just thought about Caloy and the possible faults she did why he sudddenly left, just to end up knowing he left her hanging by choice and pursued May instead. What hurts the most for Anne is knowing that May knew everything about her and started talking about it with her friends and a lot of person has known about Caloy and Anne's affair.

Anne spent the rest of the semester seeing Caloy and May together, holding hands and kissing each other, "Yes it hurts, and I wish, I never hoped." Anne said.

Then summer came, May and Caloy broke up, because of a third party. Caloy insisted that it wasn't true but May never listened to his side. It's just similar to what happened to Anne and him and also to his other ex-girlfriend, whom May is the third party.

It gets confusing if you think about it. But one thing is for sure, He is not meant for Anne, because it is forbidden by choice---maybe by Caloy or Anne, also forbidden by god, well i think he just know that she doesn't deserve him at all because she was meant to be with someone better and someone true. It is most of all forbidden by chance!

Anne spent the whole summer pondering about that experience, it is now clear to her that what happened was just part of growing up and it's just life. We have to experience falling hard, it is when we can be a better person because that is the time that we will be closer to God.

Until now, some of the issues was still left unsettled. Who was to blame? Who's the third wheel? Is Caloy really unfaithful? Was Anne really the third wheel, or the fourth, or the fifth.....? What was the real issue behind May, Caloy and his ex-girlfriend---Karen? Now it gets confusing.

I think all of those doesn't matter anymore. What matters is Anne has learned a lot from this experience and now she's having the time of her life, she also has someone who loves her for who she is--David, while Caloy was left alone, dealing with those boring nights, He doesn't have May, He doesn't have Karen, and most of all He doesn't have Anne. But then again, who knows? We must not forget, he loves to be in a Forbidden Love affair, or maybe he just want to boost his Ego? Whatever!
