Your Song
by Francis Demavivas

So there they are, sitting side by side in the stone bench located near the lagoon. In the heart of the campus, in the middle of the busy fast pace college life, they found a sanctuary to rest. It is a moment where they have no worries. No anxieties. No homeworks. No written reports. No final exams. All is well in their perspective, in the company of each other; they feel that all is fine. In the silence of the unsaid words written in their smiles, a lot can be heard. Happiness. Peace of mind. Contentment.
“Kawawa naman si Jett no? Nasa U.S. yung girlfriend… Ayun, after three months nagbreak na sila… hirap kasi nng malayo…” said by the guy wearing a white polo shirt.
“Bakit?Mahirap ba talaga yung ganong sitwasyon?” the girl beside him asked.
“Oo naman… Di kayo nagkikita, bihira kayong magkausap, basta… mahirap… mamamatay ka sa sobrang pagka-miss sa taong mahal mo…” the guy answered. “Buti pa tayo laging magkasama… Sana lagi na lang ganito no?” he added.
The girl, in blue skirt looked at him and replied with a sweet soft smile. Then, she leaned her head down to his shoulders and whistled a song.
“Your song by Parokya ni Edgar right?” the guy asked the whistling girl.
She smiled and answered, “Vince, gusto ko sa kasal ko kantahin mo yan ha…”
The girl requested as she looked through his eyes, bending her head into his chest so she can see his face.
“Yun lang ba Trish? Oo ba… sa kasal natin? Vince said with a grin.
Trish just smiled back and bended her head back to Vince’s shoulders. She whistled the same tune again as she looked at the horizon as it sets. Vince smilingly looked to the same sky. Again, enough were said for the two of them. Both were captivated by the vast rays that the sun sublimes as it drifts away. The sky is painted by different strokes of color and its aesthetic beauty is a mere abstract. A scenery of beauty yet unexplainable, and for their young hearts, the two know that the sky simply pictures their present relationship, beautiful yet undetermined.
Vince Aldeguer and Tricia Manalo are both college students in a state university in Manila. Vince, as he was commonly called by his friend, is a popular 2nd year psychology student because he is the lead vocalist of a local band in school. Tall, good looking and soft spoken. Trish on the other hand is a simple 1st year psychology student who possesses one of the most enchanting smiles and fresh faces in the college. She is quiet, studious and is on top of her class.
It was in one magical night when the two first met. It is an acquaintance party in school to welcome the freshmen students. Vince and his band performed while Tricia inadvertently won the Princess of the night. It was at the end of the party when the two accidentally bumped into each other. After an exchange of sorry and apologies, the two identified themselves.
“Di ba kayo yung tumugtog kanina? Galing niyo ah!” Trish said with a smile.
“Hehe, Kaw nga… Princess of the night… Astig!!!” Vince said with thumbs up.
And they talked as the night packed up. Getting- to-know stage. A few smiles and laughs, they both felt as ease with each other. They exchanged cell phone numbers before they part ways. Happy and infatuated, the two felt they had a connection.
Right before Vince slept that night, he received a text message from Trish, “Ei! I had a gr8 time… It was nyc miting u… Gudnyt” Vince, upon reading the text message didn’t go to sleep that night… A smile reaching his ears is obviously seen in his face. A start of beautiful something. He replied with a wish of goodnight and sweet dreams to this new flame of his heart. Since then, they’ve become constant text mates that is like sunshine in the morning and moonshade in the night. Smooth sailing…
Twenty one days since their first met, they had their first date. It was a series of firsts… Both of them are on their first time to go into a butterfly farm. Their first time to eat to that famous restaurant endorsed by Trish’s favorite local actor. First time to ride the kalesa… First time that Vince gave a flower to a girl. First time that Trish accepted a flower from a guy. First time Vincent felt those butterflies in his stomach since all his past relationships are just flings he never took seriously… First time Trish fully trust a guy and goes on a date. Those firsts are memorable, and will be forever treasured by the two of them.
They’ve been really close… They go to school together and Vince fetch her up at the end of the day. They are together during lunch breaks and eats on different stores everyday to taste new chows. During vacant hours, they love to sit and chill in the lagoon and catch the sun as it drifts… All is fine for them… Is it love? Maybe… but for Vince, he knows for sure what it is…
At the end of the semester, a battle of the bands was held in school where Vince and his band participated. When Vince was upstage, he wholeheartedly, and bravely said in front of hundreds of students watching the event:
“All this time, you were everything my heart desires… Trish, I love you!” and he sang “Your Song” by Parokya ni Edgar… He seized a bouquet of flower hidden on the guitar case lying down and while singing the song, he went near to Trish to personally give the flowers. Everyone was touched… Touched by the romantic scenery… All envied the girl who was proposed in front of everyone.
After the event, Vice hurriedly went to Trish to ask her answer. It was a shocking twist of fate. Something he didn’t expect to hear. Trish turned her down and didn’t explain anything. She left him there, stunned with a broken heart.
After a week, Vince received a text message from Trish. She said she is not ready and will only hurt him in the end. She thanked him and bid goodbye. Vince replied, “But I am willing to wait… And I will…” Trish replied, “Goodbye…” She didn’t text again. Since then, they never got to see each other again. He tried to call her but she turned off her cell phone. Vince went to her house but there are already other people who live there. He cannot contact her through her cell phone. The vacation started and ended without any trace of Trish. When schooldays returned, Trish is not on the list of enrolled students. By then, Vince accepted the bitter truth that Trish is now gone in his life.
After ten years, Trish returned to the Philippines. She and her family migrated to Canada and this is her reason why she turned Vince down. She didn’t want Vince to suffer the perils of a long distance relationship. Trish has a high paying job and is going steady with her boyfriend.
One rainy night, her boyfriend invited her for a dinner. Trish was blindfolded as her boyfriend guides her to a chair. And at the count of three, he removed his hand on her eyes and to her surprise, the words “Tricia, Will you marry me” was on a billboard in front of the restaurant and is in perfect view in the place where Trish sat. She was surprised. And before she can say anything, she heard a voice…
“It took, one look… then forever lay out in front of me…”
` A familiar voice indeed…
“One smile, then I died, only to be revived by you…”
The guy stopped singing as he was surprised by his discovery… He didn’t know that it is Tricia whom he was booked to serenade… Tricia was shocked… The guy whom she loved long before was singing in the stage, in her engagement party, but on a different person… Both were stunned by their unlikely reunion…
“There I was, thought I had everything figure out…
Goes to show just how much I know, that only life plays out…”
The lights turn on and a lot of Trish and her boyfriend’s acquaintances are standing there, smilingly and waiting for Trish’s answer… Though they don’t know how confused she is.
Tears fell on the singer’s eyes as he sings the refrain…
“I take, one step, away…
but I found myself coming back to you..
My one and only, one and only you…
Tears are flowing in her eyes as well...
“Now I know, that I know not a thing not at all…
Except the fact that I am yours, and that you are mine…”
Time freezes. Everyone stood still. Still with no answer, everyone is puzzled on Trish’s mixed emotions. Everyone is clueless to her dilemma. Memories flashed in an instant. All the times they had. The moments. The feelings have once again pumped up and returned.
“Oh, you told me that this wouldn’t be easy…
And Oh… I’m not one to complain…”
He stopped… and with all of his nostalgic emotions, sang in a higher note…
“I take, one step, away…
but I found myself coming back to you..
My one and only, one and only you…”
Everyone gave a round of applause to the performer… Tricia with tearful eyes, was holding all her emotions not to burst into tears… But she can’t… And to everyone’s surprise, Tricia ran outside… Her boyfriend was shocked. Vince ran from the stage and followed her… It was still raining. They are running in the slippery streets of the metro. When he was able to catch up, he hugged her and holds her with his entire longing… He didn’t say a word and let his embrace say everything he feels for ten long years. She continued to cry and kept saying “I’m sorry…” She hugged him real tight. All this years they long for their embrace… And on that instant, they don’t care about the rain, the world, or the others. What matters now is their feelings. And in that moment they knew, they are in other’s one and only you.
